Fourth delivery of the Letter of Peace to United Nations
Meeting with the Undersecretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Ana Tibaijuka
Barcelona, 16th September 2004 |
To close this fourth presentation, on 16th September last, members of the Letter of Peace Foundation addressed to the UN and the document’s sponsoring bodies held a meeting with the Undersecretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UN-Habitat, Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka, who had been unable to attend the official presentation ceremony of the report. The representative of the UN, sent by the organization’s Secretary-General, Koffi Annan, showed special interest in the first international congress to be held on the document.
He also expressed the good syntony between the Letter of Peace and the will and spirit of the United Nations. “The UN has a dual mission: peace and prosperity. It is an organization which was founded by civil society. Its carta magna begins by saying: “We, the people, say that’s enough! We want peace and prosperity for everyone!”. We were certain that, without people, there cannot be peace and without prosperity, it is impossible to keep peace. The United Nations was founded with the same spirit as the Letter of Peace. Now we must hope that goodwill groups help us to remember and keep us on track in this mission. For me, this initiative, the Letter of Peace, which I today have the honour of receiving, fills me with encouragement and enthusiasm”.
