Six years ago, when I came to Barcelona, I heard people talk about the Letter of Peace and that was when I begun to be curious to find out what it was.
Gradually my interest in its message grew, until one day I had the opportunity to visit the General Secretary of the Letter of Peace in Barcelona. It was then that I really began to understand its objectives.
I got to know the content of the Letter of Peace through explanations given by people I met and books that analyzed the text.
Later on I became a volunteer at the organization and I have continued to take part in different activities organized by the foundation up until today, thus deepening my understanding of the contents. This environment has also given me the opportunity to meet people from different cultures and learn from them.
I remember in 2004 when the Letter of Peace held its first celebration in the Sant Sadurni region. There were a lot of Letter of Peace volunteers there and it was a great opportunity to get to know them and hear their ideas and opinions. Together we put on a very warm celebration, helping to affirm the strong connection between peace and celebration and happiness.
If we look at each of the Letter of Peace’s points we can see that they are of upmost importance to the process of building personal, social and world peace.
For example, the third point states, “Once we have finished with these absurd resentments, why can we not be friends and work together globally to build a more united and gratifying world for our children and ourselves?” It tells us that friendship enriches us and helps us discover the qualities that lie within others and ourselves. Friends are a real treasure. In China we say that having a friend is like having another companion to walk with you along life’s path.
I suppose that if someone works in a place with a nice atmosphere, it means they enjoy their work and the relationships they form with their colleagues, and in this way they create the perfect climate for everything to work well. However, to create this ideal living atmosphere, they must first accept themselves and their history, because if you are not happy with yourself you will not be happy with the people around you.
I hope more people get to know the Letter of Peace in order to build a world where they can live in the absence of conflicts and in the presence of friendship.
