Students and teachers at the Salesians Primary School in Mataro (Catalonia, Spain), who have recently started to study the points in the Letter of Peace addressed to the UN, were delighted to receive the “blanket letter” sent to them by the Quino Secondary School in Mexico, which they had produced as a part of their work for peace.
The 10 to 11 year old students were presented with the “letter” by Jordi Cussó, who talked to them about his experience in Mexico and of the need that exists to work for peace in order to improve the current social situation there.
In order to explain what it means to “improve the current social situation” they had to look at the points of the Letter of Peace addressed to the UN- which was made even more interesting by doing so in the context of other children who came from a very different social reality.
The school and the students responded very eagerly: they studied themes relating to peace through stories and songs, ran activities to collect food and toys for children in the name of peace, carried out debates and wrote letters back to the children in Hermosillo.
The children from Mataro explain their experiences of peace, the work they have done at the school and give information about their city in the letters that will be sent to Mexico. In this way they try to reply to the questions the children in Quino School asked them.
And so, we can confidently say that the joint educational project taking place in both countries is continuing and that the children are the ones who are getting most out of it.
